UNDERSTAND THE LIMITATIONS

Confident wording can still contain errors.

AI can produce incorrect or incomplete results, omit important hazards and cite sources or standards inaccurately. It may misunderstand the application, use outdated information or make assumptions that do not match the actual site.

Check the calculations

Verify input data, units, equations, boundary conditions, load cases, safety factors and numerical results. Check applicability and use independent calculations or validated tools where required.

Check the documents

Confirm requirements, drawings, material specifications, procedures and cited sources. Resolve missing information and contradictions before issuing a document to a client, supplier or operator.

Check the real conditions

Confirm the operating environment, foreseeable misuse, failure modes, manufacturing limitations and maintenance needs. Inspect, test and validate the product where appropriate.

ENGINEERING ACCOUNTABILITY

Keep a qualified engineer in control.

DATUM supports engineering judgement. It does not replace competent design review, site-specific risk assessment, testing or authorisation to release a design.

Automated checks and recorded reviews do not establish regulatory compliance, certification, fitness for purpose or an approved warranty. Legal and consumer-law conclusions require current authoritative sources and appropriate specialist review.

  1. Confirm the basisUse verified requirements, source data and operating conditions. Identify every assumption.
  2. Verify the resultCheck calculations and technical content independently. Investigate discrepancies and uncertain outputs.
  3. Validate and approveComplete the required testing and risk review. Record the responsible reviewer, evidence, revision and release decision.

Know what each tool actually does.

Some DATUM functions use templates, entered data and deterministic calculations rather than AI. Report generation does not mean that external research, independent verification or an engineering assessment has occurred. Market comparisons and legal reviews currently depend on the sources entered by the user.

Treat draft user manuals, installation guides, job safety analyses, service intervals and warranty estimates as unapproved until reviewed for the specific product and its intended use. Never use an unchecked output as a safety instruction or a substitute for an approved procedure.
